This one made a LOT of sense. Because after all...some times actors play roles, characters VASTLY different from their core personality (take Michael Richards for example, a very philosophical personality in person, but plays a quite a contrary character). In many ways I feel I do that as well. It's difficult to distinguish what parts of me are character versus just "me" at times. Even when trying to recreationally entertain I approach it with a seriousness, so it can even be difficult for me to make a distinguishing characteristic!

"The Weakness of the men he chose to play maybe be his most lasting legacy. His image...was that of a man chiseling detachment out of intense pain. No star who looked as heroic as Newman ever took on more losers, cads, bums, bastards, and beaten men, or played them with more understanding or less sentimentality." (p. 28)

An Update of Acting, Comedy, NLP, Nature, Math Interests

I liked the days before all the massive spam bulk forwarding email freak fests...When an email was as rare as a letter from a friend or a postcard from a traveler...sigh.

In any case, I realized I'm very much like a kid. When I was a lot younger I never really dreamt of being a Superman or a super hero or a fireman or things that kids typically dream of an envision themselves as. So I realized in my young adulthood I've still acted as a dreamer but dreaming and pretending to be as epic as Paul Newman or as talented as Collin Farrel, Brad Pitt, or Tom Cruise or Gabriel Byrne or maybe as wise as Emerson or as clever as Einstein or as peaceful as the Dalai Lama. More recently have dreamt "play-pretending" of being as talented as the actors or comedians as witty as Jim Carrey or as fearless Robin Williams. But it's still the same as dreaming of being a superhero at age 4.

Being a constant lifelong learner, I always have to have something to study and with which to connect my mind. As of late (the past few months and years), I've been studying Neurolinguistic Programming (useful for communications, for general conversations with people, to giving performances such as comedy on stage, NLP is essential), some Jungian Psychology (for creativity and peace in aiming to understand the complex areas of life), rudimentary math (for clarity), as well as audition and standup comedy books to keep me aligned and focused on career.

This one made a LOT of sense. Because after all...some times actors play roles, characters VASTLY different from their core personality (take Michael Richards for example, a very philosophical personality in person, but plays a quite a contrary character). In many ways I feel I do that as well. It's difficult to distinguish what parts of me are character versus just "me" at times. Even when trying to recreationally entertain I approach it with a seriousness, so it can even be difficult for me to make a distinguishing characteristic!

I just know I've been type-casted a lot as the troubled person who doesnt' get a job and calls upon friends family or random "helpers" for their sound advice. I've been typecasted as that role (and as the "student") for many many many many many many years. I think it would be a refreshing change for me to play the advice-giver or the teacher for once. To do that I'll need to treat my exercise as medication. I live like 400m away from these amazing trails! I've got to get out on those atleast 2-3 times a week and surf like 1-2 times a week minimum. I paddled out at Point Dume at 7am last week and hit up the Santa Monica Trails a week ago too. Nature is that life source that refuels you, clarifies you, it's so easy just to paddle out in the ocean or walk on a trail but the effects of it are like getting a college degree or doing complex drug compatibility alignment medical healing or lifecoaching. Complexi in the simple; simplicty from the complex. Nature is both complex and highly mathematically intelligent and extremely simple in some lights.

Anyways, funny you mentioned your friend Jeremy who works for Disneyland. The jeremy I mentioned works for Katsuya which is apparently some really hip happening celebrity restaurant thing, I heard someone else say that Hollywood was like the "adult Disneyland", so in a way maybe the Jeremy I know works for Disneyland too haha!

Also that's funny you mentioned a friend who believes in all those "million dollars in your mailbox" internet scams. While I'm not guillible for those, I have had a HUGE number of times of getting duped and scammed by con artists --- from some guy saying he'll get me a job at a chevy dealership so I lend him $60 and give him a lift to some place only to find out they've never heard of him...to cab drivers double charging me...to getting sold generic speakers with the price jacked up...haha! I guess all hard-earned (literally) lessons. All of my 'spam bulk" emails are from casting companies and lifecoaching certification comapnies...which while they're still asking you to sign up for membership stuff atleast Hey it's more aligned with things I'm interested in in life!

I have no interest in fishing, but that's soooo cool and I sincerely admire and almost envy that ability you have to wake up and "go to work "and that "work that you go to" is what you love to do (the fishing thing). Recently it's been difficult to pinpoint what I love, but NLP, comedy, and Nature (surfing, hiking etc) are definitely all huge interests. If I could wake up and do NLP (and there's a lot of opportunity for NLP in comedy on a HUGE scale), I'd feel pretty happy or teaching. I guess any of those things would be validating because it'd be a meaningful (like with the purpose of teaching someone math or helping someone with a problem or helping someone laugh and ease their troubles) act.

As for Health, I'm much more interested in swimming than biking, the run is just always accessible. I have this kind of yoga like mini circuit with free weights and own body weight I can do in most any place which has accessibility as well.

The main reason why I contacted you when I was freaking out was because I was strongly considering going overseas to get work (Europe or Oceania). That seemed like a big endeavor so I felt I should tell someone I guess.

I think the biggest thing going on in my life these days is maybe for once I DO know what's best for me, and I'm encountering these people who smoke or who eat unhealthily or who have this maladaptive habits that I know (because I've experienced the bad habits personally) are weighing down their life. I feel like if I don't point out solutions to them, I'm doomed to adopt those patterns myself, to drift into the poor patterns if I just overlook the problems people have. But then again you truly cannot change anyone who doesn't want to change and I guess focusing on myself, on the Nature Hikes I need and fuck people. I came back from a Nature hike and these people having a pool party offered me a beer and then this guy comes over and says "his women are trying" implying that I should be making an effort to talk to the women at the party, but they're all married and then they present the vibe of "don't make them uncomfortable" and it's all just a gigantic scam. People are scam. Truly. A huge underlying theme I've noticed in LA is that it's all about being distracted or confused. I thought for awhile that was the agenda of LA to distract and/or confuse you. But it's not; people are just simply distracted and confused here!! haha!! The trick is that if I connected with Nature -- Surfing-Ocean, Hiking-Wilderness trails -- being confused or distracted in the throng of people confusion is just something laughable because there's always that true unwavering, authentic raw intelligence of Nature always there. I'm only lost when I don't connect with that.

And it DOES change you. After I came back from a two and a half hour hike, I was disgusted by bars (well, I've been disgusted by bars by strangely drawn back to them for the past 4-5 years now that I think about it) and just felt so clear in myself and saw how sloppily people had led their lives, marrying at odd ages, having kids, getting sucked into relationships because of obligations or illusions of limiting beliefs etc...Nature, Ocean, and Wilderness gives me the clarity to have peace to rise above that and ultimately make better decisions in my own life.

Math enables me to take that bit of Nature with me wherever I go when I can't connect with it. The most appealing bit of Nature, most certainly is the mathematical precision and intelligence inherent in it. So doing math problems, the universality of that universal langauge suffices to connect with that Universal source of Nature.

NLP is for connecting and interacting with people and doing performance. If I never interacted with people, or never had to perform, I wouldn't need NLP, but people exist, therefore I must study and use NLP.

Auditions, Comedy books, and dissolving limiting beliefs keep me going, prevent me from getting stuck; those resources maintain momentum and prevent blockages of doubt from arising. Blockages of doubt and uncertainty or insecurity will ALWAYS appear at any level of success, so it's important ot have a method of dealing with those and dissolving limiting beliefs does that.

I seriously thought the reporter was acting. how could she be so serious and controlling and almost hostilely reprimanding?? wtf?!!! lol. have people become so foully political that a good party is severely scolded? WHERE the hell do you have raging good parties where you can be LOUD (and everyone's safe, all good stuff, etc.) did people forget how ... Read Moreimportant actually having fun is? Is everyone like this? Where are the people who embrace the occasionally extremely lively party?!! IF there's so much time for hush hush, there has to be time for loud, uproarious good solid awesome parties too! :D lol.

Sure, doing this every night would be too much simply because people couldn't sleep. So a little discretion there, but really, it's something that should be heralded in many respects.

While calling this kid a savior, may be a teeny bit far-fetched, he's damn close to it! Due to conformity, fear, lack of identity, and subversion into politics, people have completely forgotten and neglected the meaning and the act of a good party. I thought the parents and the reporters were seriously "actors" because their reactions (shock and outrage) appeared so unnecessarily inflated. haha... Read More!! Thank god there still exists people like corey in the world who choose to listen to their inner voice and their own "iron string" instead slipping into delusions of what you're supposed to do. This kid is a walking example of Emersonian self-reliance. Long live aussie corey!! haha! Self-reliance!

The kid's so frickin funny! haha lol. he's so good at pissing people off and simultaneously having like amounts fun worth being jealous over haha!! I love it, people seem to perpetually stumble and tiptoe around on eggshells these days, and this kid just like sledge hammers them!! so outrageous!

I mean seriously..no one died, no one was injured, the intentions were for a party, a spirited congregation for togetherness...like the media has become so revoltingly clogged with negative news, catastrophes (fires, murders, trials, blah) that when something actually in good spirits (a party) accumulates enough critical mass to catch the eye of the media, the media ALWAYS has this compulsion to frame things in a negative destructive light. Not only is denouncing this kid's party as bad, wrong, or "out of line" destructive, but condemning and negatively framing spirited gatherings like this show negatively warped, myopic and clouded many of the status quo beliefs have become -- people are so maladjusted to fires, murders, "negative news" that news of people actually converging for a purpose of merriment and recreation, appalls people!; and THAT is appalling! haha.

2. Visualize and ask Questions about your moves. Take time to visualize the board and pick the best possible move. Before performing a check or move always scrutinize the move from all angles. Ask questions such as

"What lines will open up after this move?"
"How is my development? How can I enhance it? What are my weaknesses?" Example answer: "My pawn structure is strong but I need to bring my knight to control the center."

"Will there be any discovered attacks?" "How does this move support my development, attack my opponent, and/or defend my pieces?" Example Answer: This move will support my knight's advancement to the g-file, protect my rook, and it set's up a mating skewer".


Scrutinize your opponents' moves first and play defensively, so you avoid haphazardly jumping into a messy situation.
3. Visualize and ask questions about your opponent's moves.
Good questions to ask about your opponent's moves:
"Why did he just move there?" Example answer: "He now attacks my bishop with his pawn and he bolstered his pawn structure."

"How can I setup a fork? What if my opponent's piece(s) were located there at xyz? Could I set up a fork or skewer or pin then? What's a way I could throw out some bait to get my opponent's piece(s) to fall into a trap where I exploit a tactic?

Example Answer: My opponents king is positioned such that if his rook moves to e8, I could move in with my Knight and knight-fork the king and the rook (winning the rook) so if I attack his rook with mine, he might retreat his rook to the "bait" square enabling me to pounce on the knight-fork opportunity.

"What can he do to my pieces and my development with that move?" "Was his last move great (!), typical, or a blunder (?)? Example answer: "His queen has greater mobility now. Watch out for it." or "His knight is trapped in the corner, try to capture it."

"Does he have any mate threats?" Example answer: "Yes, he's threatening a mate in two, I'll need to defend that."

"What are the weaknesses in his development and how can I exploit them?" Example answer "I have the bishop pair so I should utilize my bishops."

"Did my opponent just make a weak move?" "How can I exploit that?"

Often times with two equally matched players and no blunders, the player who can most effectively spot, understand, and exploit the opponent's "weak" or "doubtful" moves will decidedly win the game in the long run. The skill of understanding the poor or good judgment of your own possible moves and your opponents moves is a skill that's worth tremendous value. Practice these questioning and critique skills to vastly improve your game!

4. Understand and apply tactics. Know how to spot, set-up, and utilize the following:
~01 Skewers
~02 Pins
~03 Discovered Attacks
~04 Forks (especially the Knight Fork)
~05 Entrapment (the most effective is "Smothered mate")
~06 Triangulation (for endgame having the "opposition")
~07 Zchwissenzhug (the "intermediate move")
~08 Back-rank Mates
~09 Defence Destruction
5. Do not attack prematurely or without sufficient support from your pieces. Wait until you've arranged a strong attack to execute it, instead of attacking with only 1 or 2 of your pieces, have as many of your pieces as possible engaged in an attack. The center's value comes into play here because it's easy to synchronize an attack when you hold the center and have well-balanced development.




Opening
*1. Move each piece once with the goal of mobilizing all your pieces. (Ensures comprehensive development, high utilization, and tempo-loss-avoidance of pieces).

1)comprehensive development (wholistic development of your entire piece set)
2)tempo-loss avoidance (you don't lose a tempo).
3)high utility of piece set (each piece has something to do).]
In the event that one of your pieces gets attacked in the first 6-8 moves, your opponent most likely deviated from this core guideline by moving a piece more than once and will likely have lost tempo, or have an undeveloped opening. Exploit that as much as possible. The opening should be devoted to assembling your arsenal of pieces not just one small area of the chess board. Dynamically mobilize your entire "chess troop" instead of just one or two pieces. Moving one or two pieces works best for middle game when you have the freedom of movement, flexbility, and support of all your other pieces after a solid opening game. Not developing your pieces in the opening can wreck your middle game. For any utilization of core tactics, you'll have to develop.
2. Control the center. The center four squares (d4,d5,e4,e5) and the extended center (d4,d5,e4,e5,c6,d6,e6,f6,f5,f4,f3,e3,d3,c3,c4, and c5) to maximize cramped opponent play and open flexible and versatile play and options for you.
3. After castling, don't allow your opponent to open a file in front of your king. Before castling you can just castle to the protected side if a file opens up on the a,b,or xor f,g,h files. But after castling you must use those as a protective barrier for the king.
4. Develop your pieces on each half of the board equally.
*5. Don't cross the center line in the opening. Usually if you cross the center line, you've had to violate the first rule of openings (Move each piece once). With a few exceptions, like the Ruy Lopez which crosses the center line on the third move to attack a key opponent piece, pieces should generally develop on your half of the board in the opening to develop a strong foundation.
6. Avoid captures that will develop your opponent's pieces. In other words, if you have the option to take your opponent's f-file pawn or their e-file pawn and the f-file take will destroy your opponent's king protection, while taking the e-file pawn will enable your opponent to develop his pieces and control the center, definitely take the f-file pawn! Instead of making captures that result in bolstering your opponent's development, make captures that cramp and stifle the development of your opponents pieces and enhance your own development. Notable examples of this are a queen exchange where your opponent must recapture with the King, costing the option of castling.
7. Avoid exchanging bishops for knights. Bishops and Knights fluctuate in value throughout the course of the game. In the opening bishops hold more value than knights because their long-ranged attacks. In the endgame knights can prove to have a greater value for their decisive ability to fork your opponent's pieces. Additionally, for some players having two bishops can positively effect your play more than having two knights, depending on your style of playing. Then the "bishop pair" can have greater value than a knight and a bishop, especially for certain styles of play. Conclusively, bishops and knights have variant values depending on the player and the stage of the game, but in the opening some players prefer to hold onto bishops. That mainly revolves around your personal preference choice, however.
8. Protect the king. Generally, you accomplish this by castling.
9. Create opportunities to capture pawns and pieces. Start looking for those essential captures, setting up discovered attacks, maybe forks, trying to plan ahead to exploit a weakness in your opponent's pawn structure of piece development. As always throughout the game, the questions LINK you ask in order to evaluate your opponents pieces and your own are just as important in the opening than any other part of the game.
10. Know your opening books 5-7 moves deep and exploit aberrations to main lines. If your opponent does something irregular in the first 5-7 moves of a common opening of which you've studied all the main lines, it's likely a blunder. Exploit that poor move of your opponent. It could be as big as leading to an early mate, or cramping his development in the long run. It's easy to lose a game in the opening, so avoid playing too many non-book moves yourself.
Endgame
1. Utilize the king's attacking capacity.
2. Push passed pawns.
3. Support passed pawns with rooks.

e4 King's Pawn Opening

e4 e5
Although modern grandmasters favor less traditional moves out of novelty, the e4 move is the most popular and certainly the most traditional play in history over the long run as an opening move for white. The logic behind this is simple. 1. e4 accomplished three essential things: attacks and occupies 2 center squares; opens the queen's mobility; and open's the bishop's mobility. It makes sense, therefore, why black often replicates this move with 1.e4 e5, which leads into this sequence of openings.

Nf6 Nc3. 3.Bb5 Ruy Lopez (Spanish) -- After black's best response of a6, white has two equally balanced alternatives the "Retreat" Ba4 or the "Exchange" Bxc6, each resulting in a different variation of play. One thing to watch out for when playing the Retreat alternative is the advancement of black's pawn structure to a6, b5, and c4 resulting in the ancient Noah's Ark trap, and the entrapment loss of the white bishop.
Guico Piano ("Quiet Opening"; Italian) -- After this opening sequence, white has two very polarized, but equally as effective lines: the first, extremely passive and the latter, extremely aggressive. 4.d3, the passive alternative, results in the Guico Pianisimo ("Quietest Game"), while the Evans Gambit, 4.b4?!, sacrifices a pawn enabling white to develop his queen-side bishop and have strong center control.
King's Gambit -- GMs today claim that after capturing the sacrificed pawn black can still reacquire position, rendering the gambit somewhat useless. Nevertheless, to have a complete opening repertoire, one should know what to do if up against the King's Gambit.
Evan's Gambit

e6. d4 d5. French Defense --
c6. d4 d5. Caro-Khan -- Notice the similarity between the French and Karo-Cahn defence. The second move are identical and black's first move (the defence) both have subtlety.
c5 (Nf3 d6. 3.d4 cxd4 4.Nxd4 Nf6 5.Nc3 g6) Sicilian (Dragon) -- Like the Caro-Kahn, the Sicilian defense starts with black mobilizing the c-file, but unlike the subtlety of the Caro-Khan, black moves to the 5th rank immediately, directly challenging the center. Popular at the master level, the Sicilian releases an interesting and unique array of opening lines. The most popular variation of the Sicilian is the Dragon variation detailed above, named (from a silly constellation-like origin) because black's pawn structure supposedly resemble a dragon after this sequence.

d4 ???
1. d4 Nf6 2. c4 g6 3. Nc3 Bg7 King's Indian Defense -- A favorite of greats like Kasparov and Fischer, this hypermodern opening, undoubtedly has tremendous popularity with advanced players.

Indian Defences.

Obviously, there exists a tremendous possibility of transposition between all of these indian defenses because of their similarities in the first 2 moves.

Non-e4/non-d4 openings by white are considered "flank" openings because white aims to control the center via flanking manuevers.

"What I want in a performance is I want it to be spontaneous; I want it to be now. Not you know happening in the past. We try to work towards getting rid of the mechanics, the technique. And I don't judge it. And there's times where as an actor where I'm working and I feel nothing and I don't panic and go "oh my god I feel nothing!" I always take from the point of view of "okay well that's interesting. I don't invalidate. I don't fight what's going to happen. I din't try to create. I've done my work. It gets inside of you see that it's just there. And when youre there you just want to fly and play jazz."

The Image of an Actor as The Product
WOW! :D IT IS image!!! The People that work with Tom Cruise in a business sense (his agent, publicist, manager etc), Kevin Huvane, Rick Nicita, and Pat Kingsley are always working on securing not Tom Cruise, but his IMAGE!!! :D Image is NOT some surreal hoofey-doofy aura bs wavelength crap it's a business product!! Tom Cruise's image of the ultimate heartthrob was what made and does make him huge amounts of coin and it's why the best agency, CAA, works with him! That's fascinating because that's what Breck was talking about "image". Image is NOTHING abou fruedian-jungian-archetypes (well they're images too) but he was talking about IMAGE in the business-entertainment sense. How people see you. Tom Cruise's movies sell HEAPS because of his image as a heartthrob! But then STRANGELY enough....it was his sister Lee Anne Devette that apparently kept him so anchored from pulling the "Oprah stunts" which I didn't think of as that destructive at all, but the media hype DID. NOW I finally see the lens through which agents, publicists, acting managers and the like see actors -- as a product, but the actor themselves is NOT the product, it's their image that's the product. It's the image of the actor that sells. It was tom cruise's image (not tom cruise himself) but his image that garnered 5 consecutive $100+ million films!! Now of course, the actor creates the image, but other people most certainly help shape and mold and anchor it. THAT's amazing. That's the career, actually earning money, business side of acting I've been blind to and am now finally parts of which I am finally understanding! Sweet :D!

But i mean I can see why some actor's do and don't do Inside the Actor's Studio: it has a huge potential (potentially uplifting, potentially destructive, mostly always uplifting though) impact on image. I mean during Cruise's Inside the Actor's Studio, you could almost just literally see how all of his CAA crew in the Front Row -- Wagner, Nicita, The head CAA manager dude Huvane -- were almost just like monitoring their image-product investment!! It wasn't disturbing nor "wrong" it's just the nature of the business. I think it's awesome! To finally understand the relationship there with actor image and agency and the business side of a creative performer.

I find the fact that these famous, successful and (atleast in regards to Bale) talented performers have and occasionally display rage, a relief; it shows they have real, unpolished, emotion --just like some of us, like you, like myself, like normal people experience.

INteresting b/c He has to seperate himself from all "potential relationships" (the hooker gf, the "quasi-friends at the plant, etc" so he can do himself justice and turn himself in. His compulsion for honesty is was intuitively causes him to sever all those relationships subconsciously. The severings (chopping off arms, throwing dishes at the gf) were harsh and uncooth, but those relationsihps would hinder him in his commitment to do justice.

And that's so interesting b/c in life he was a lawyer, the early references to various labor acts and rights in the factory allude to that. So he's inherently living a contradictaion of agenda. If he tried to protect the guilty (or innocent) in life, then when he becoms the guildy after the hit and run, half of his brain has been trained to conceal his guilt and protect himself but then the moralistic self emerges after years and his commitment to personal justice seeps tshrough as he finally admits what he did and in a way "does himself justice". Very GREAT allusions. At the end he was wearing a "justice brothers" t-shirt. The movie was about finding a compromise between the legal protect guilty or innocent and the emotional moralistic "what is right" doing good from a belief point of view. In the end he got to know "both justice brothers" -- both complementary components of his psyche, moralistic honesty and judicial prudence. He suppressed the moralistic honesty part and it just seeped through in ugly ways.

Now that is siimilar to me in junior year. I severed ties with people and that was SOME part of me seeping through. I had to seperate myself from those people as a commitment to them would inhitibt whatever was seeping through from getting recognized. The question is "just what is that"? Couldn've been anger, dislike disgust, mostly it was knowing tons oabotu people emotionally and wanting to share it? to teach? not sure. but the schism that occured was similar int voialteit so that's ggreat to know whatever needed to get out has! now i'm just mregingoete .

So most of hte movie was literally hallucinations. The french woman, ivan, all of that was hallucinations. Ivan representethe moaralistic "doing good" side of him maybe.

Can't help but think that breck is connectd to my version of this. Treat every invitation as a mere compliment and that way declining the invitation is a lot easier to do!! When someone invites you to a group, a party, an event, or to be a member that's a MASSIVE compliment!! They're saying "hey, we like you, we can tell you're a good person, we want to interact with you more often or on a regular basis". So often very nice and grateful people find it difficult to decline invitations they can't accept for fear of it looking like a sock in the gut in the face of "great praise of an invitation". Therefore, merely treat each invitation as a simple huge compliment to which you say "Thanks!!" and act incredibly grateful toward the compliment aspect of the invitation!! But most importantly do that AFTER you decline. How you end is emphasized when communicating so end with the praise, on the upbeat. So immediately say "Oh I'd love to, but I can't. But you guys are soo awesome wow!! Fun times for sure!! Jeez great group of people!" So you get it clear that you decline the invitation but then you smother that declination with praise and herald and more gratitude again, so the part about you that people like -- the grateful, appreciative, respectful, loving part -- stays on even keel, stays emergent, stays in the game.

Why is the skill of declining an invitation so vital to remaining positve, focused, clear, and ontrack with your own goals?? Possessing the skill to effectively and gracefully decline inclinations is essential to achievement.
